Exciting word from Dan Guarino, chair of the Writers Group:

The next RAA Writers Group meeting will be on Monday, July 20 at 6 p.m. in sTudio 7, the larger of the two RAA gallery buildings in RoCA, Fort Tilden. At the last meeting, plans were taking shape to participate in the fall ARTSPLASH exhibition as a group by doing a Sunday afternoon event during the exhibition's run. The event would feature staged prose readings, short plays, poetry, etc., of group members. Any type of material could be read. Either the author could read it, or he or she could choose to have another do so. Segments might even be interspersed with musical acts to make it all the more inviting.

If you have ideas and/or wish to become a member in order to participate, be prepared at the July meeting to discuss those ideas; that meeting will be devoted to the discussion.

The deadline for individual submissions for ARTSPLASH is August 8, 2009. See rockawayartistsalliance.org for details. Your writing work could be in printed form, filmed, videoed or recorded. The possibilities are open. And, of course, you may submit any other type of artwork.

"Geometric" is entering its last weekend, on view through Sunday, June 28 in sTudio 7. My final words about this exhibit pertain to two works by Penelope Atheras that had great impact on me. In "Dancing Lines," a starkly dramatic black and white painting in acrylic on canvas, the artist somehow creates the kinetic rhythm and movement inherent in the design of a seashell. A product of the forces of our oceans appears to be flowing in place. That rhythm is in union with the rhythms inside each of us.

With simple shapes, a limited palette of green and black and the muted grays born of that mixture, Atheras' "Silent Moments" subtly presents the pain, power and passions of a woman standing alone at a window in contemplative silence. Each one of us has stood at that window.
