Shootings In And Around Ocean Bay Houses

By Nicholas Briano By Nicholas Briano A series of shootings this week has left two teenagers and one unidentified male wounded, once again raising suspicions about gang related violence in and around the Ocean Bay houses in Arverne.

All three shootings occurred within four blocks of one another and involved 17- and 18-year-old men, all of whom are expected to survive after being treated at Jamaica Hospital, according to police.

The string of shootings started Sunday at 2:39 a.m. in front of 410 Beach 54 Street, when an 18-yearold unidentified male was shot in his right side. He is reportedly in stable condition at Jamaica Hospital, police said.

That shooting was followed by another on Monday at 4:00 p.m. in front of 5145 Almeda Avenue. A 17- year-old male was shot in the thigh and rushed to Jamaica Hospital. No arrests have been made yet and the unidentified male is also expected to live.

And once again on Monday at approximately 3:30 p.m. in front of 5409 Almeda Avenue an unidentified male was found with a gunshot in his leg after police responded to an initial call regarding an altercation at Beach 49 Street.

Increased gun violence between groups of young people living at Ocean Bay Apartments has been on the rise since early this year and residents have recently requested more of a police presence after learning that rival gangs from different Ocean Bay buildings were targeting one another.
