Sanders Works Up Sweat With Rockaway Residents

Nearly 100 people came pumped up and ready to shed pounds on Saturday, June 15, to kick-off Councilman James Sanders Jr.'s 3rd annual Rockaway Walks.

"Today we made the first step in taking back our lives by coming out to take control of our eating and exercise habits," said Councilman Sanders. "Tomorrow is not promised, therefore, we must ensure we are doing everything in our own hands to live longer," he added.

Rockaway Walks was founded three years ago in response to climbing obesity and diabetes rates in the Rockaways.

The health initiative notably aided several participants in shedding pounds and helped promote healthy living styles.

Eric Matza, Vice President of Development and Public Relations at St. John's Episcopal Hospital, said, "We are so pleased that Rockaway Walks has become such a success and an excellent way for Rockaway residents to get healthier and fight heart disease while having fun. We encourage more people to come out and join us on Saturday mornings!"

This year's sponsors include St. John Episcopal Hospital, Addabbo Family Health Center, Affinity Health Plan, the Department of Environmental Protection, The Wave, Far Rockaway Eyecare, Unita's Shook, and Healthy Lifestyle Changes Inc.
