Rockaway Walks Program

A coalition of Rockaway health providers led by Councilman James Sanders Jr., is kicking off the Third Annual Rockaway Walks, a healthy lifestyle walking initiative. The initiative is designed to encourage people to adopt healthy lifestyles by making it a community-wide effort. The kickoff event will also feature a light, healthy breakfast and free screenings for high blood pressure. The Rockaway Walks kickoff "Bash" will take place on Saturday, June 13 at 8 a.m. at Beach 11 Street on the boardwalk.

"Statistics show that more than one out of every four residents in the Rockaways is obese. But we don't want to single out any one person, we want everyone—seniors and youngsters—to join in. Please come join us on Saturday, June 13 to take the one small step to turning around the rest of our lives," said Sanders.

The walk will continue every Saturday morning at 8 a.m. at the same meeting place until Saturday, September 13, when participants will meet to celebrate and get fits. The walks will be preceded by a warm-up session led by Steven McCartney, motivational speaker and fitness instructor for people with arthritis. This year as in the past any participant with the best attendance will receive a $25 gift certificate from Modell's Sporting Goods.

Rockaway Walks is a collaborative effort led by Councilman Sanders and includes St. John's Episcopal Hospital, Addabbo Family Health Center, Affinity Health Plan, The Wave, Unita's Shook (fruit and vegetable market), Far Rockaway Eyecare and Healthy Lifestyle Changes, Inc.
