The Progressive

An American Story
Commentary John Paul Culotta

It always comes as a surprise the extent to which the political class can manipulate public opinion with nonissues. We all are ignorant of important facts but our school system is neglecting to instruct our young men and women of facts that may be a threat to democratic practices.

Sotomayor, is the Supreme Court justice nominee we are now told by the mass media comes from an immigrant background.

Sotomayor is Puerto Rican, which means her parents and the nominee are American citizens from birth. How can they be classified immigrants? A person born in any other state that moves to our city is not considered an immigrant.

We then are told that maybe she is not aware of the American mindset by some commentators. How can that be true? She was raised in the Bronx, attended American schools and has never lived outside the United States. Puerto Rico is a part of United States.

Press coverage has also made Catholicism an issue. Sotomayor attended Catholic schools. Our Supreme Court now has a majority Catholic population. Clarence Thomas was listed as a Roman Catholic but he is an Anglican who was taught in Catholic schools. There is no religious qualification for any public office in this country. Anti- Catholicism has always been an ugly American prejudice but has been almost eradicated. Why the need to resurrect the issue?

Sotomayor is a Latina Roman Catholic woman who is qualified for the position. Her sex, her ethnicity, and religion are not important.
