Just as robins are a sign of spring, there are lots of tip-offs that summer is coming to Rockaway. First of all, new signs went up along the boardwalk reminding beachgoers of all the things they can't do on the beach. There have been some changes this year. Dogs can now be walked on the beach if they are leashed, and if the owners pick up after their pets, but not between May 1 and September 30. Bike riding is permitted except on weekends and holidays after 10 a.m. from May 1 to September 30. One thing that has not changed is the curfew times. The beach is still closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and the boardwalk is closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. People enjoy themselves on Beach 116 Street on a hot day over the Memorial Day Holiday. The beach mat is in place on Beach 116 Street to allow handicapped beachgoers to get to the water. This unidentified man is obviously enjoying the memorial to those who died in American Airlines Flight 587 by stretching out for a nap.
