Two RAA exhibitions begin this Saturday, June 6, with an opening reception on Sunday, June 7 from 1-3 p.m. in sTudio 6 and sTudio 7 Galleries. The large, airy spaces of sTudio 7 will be filled with "Geometric," explorations and musings on forms, shapes and structures in their varieties of manifestations and mutations - abstract/ detailed; clearly defined/amorphous; repeated/discovered by chance.

Some of Yuri Yurov's sharply defined digital images abstract architectural forms down to their geometric basics. Yet upon first glance of his clever and involving "Pyramid," the repeated images appear to be amorphous forms that impress as alien creatures. On closer, more considered examination, however, one discovers unexpected and slightly jarring form and content. "Geometric" is on view in sTudio 7 through Sunday, June 28.

Carol Rickey is an artist who has appeared in this column before. This journalist is a particular fan of her artworks. Several of them are on display in her first solo show, "A Taste of Whimsy," on view through June 21 in sTudio 6.

Rickey's oils and watercolors combine saturated, contrasting colors in dynamic, vibrating fashion. Her fanciful, "whimsical" juxtaposition of objects and figures create strong "Neverlandish" universes that provoke humor and a strange sense that more profound depths are to be revealed upon closer examination of the picture plane and the viewer's memory.

Make Music NY:

RAA is hosting a Live Music Fest on June 21, 2009 - 3 Stages - over 20 bands - all day long! Part of a global celebration of music taking place on the first day of summer, MMNY begins at 11 a.m. and runs through 10 p.m. The three RAA stages are all located in Fort Tilden and Riis Park. A myriad of music genres and musicians will perform at these free concerts. In this third year of the festival — special jazz events and a special feature called "Mass Appeal."
