H1N1 Inaccuracy

Dear Editor,

I would like to make a comment on your article about flu. The statement that "Private doctors must also test for H1N1 virus," etc. is inaccurate. Only the Health Dept can test for the virus. The testing is very expensive. Private offices can only do rapid flu testing which can differentiate between types A and B flu. The current CDC and NYSDOH guidelines state that only seriously ill patients should be tested.

This testing is usually done in the hospital setting and sent to the DOH. For more information you can go to www.nyc.gov/health.
