Not In My Backyard
The Broad Channel Cell Tower Committee, formed from the Broad Channel Civic Association would like to thank City Councilman Eric Ulrich for his support of the Cell Phone Bill. This bill was written by City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. The bill before the city council would make sure that all cell phone companies go to the community boards first before erecting their cell towers and cell panels near homes, schools and parks. It allows the buildings department to keep a record of where and how many of these devices are being placed in our neighborhoods. It would allow the people to have a voice as to where these towers and panels are placed.
Our committee also has the support of Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer for the past five years. We would like to thank her chief of staff, Joann Shapiro, for the many hours she has put towards our efforts of working with T-Mobile on a more suitable site for their equipment on the island.
Our committee is not against cell panels, but we do believe that the people in our communities should have a say as to where these companies are placing their telecommunications towers. No one should wake up to find a 200 foot tower facing their bedroom window. That is what happened to one of our neighbors. The next tower could be near your home. If there are any civic associations, school parent associations or concerned residents that would like to receive more information on the city council bill please e-mail me at BCUPTOWN711@aol.com.
