Rockaway, BC Memorial Day Parades This Weekend
The annual Rockaway Memorial Day parade, sponsored by the Daniel M. O'Connell Post 272 of the American Legion, will begin with a 10:30 a.m. memorial mass on Monday, May 25 at St. Francis de Sales Church, immediately followed by a wreath laying service at the Four Chaplains Memorial outside of the church.
The parade will step off at 11:30 a.m. at Beach 129 Street, and the line of march will continue along Rockaway Beach Boulevard to Memorial Circle between Beach 120 and Beach 121 Streets, where the Jewish War Veterans of America will conduct remembrance services at 12 noon.
The parade will proceed east along Rockaway Beach Boulevard to the Doughboy Monument and Women's Veterans Monument at Beach 94 Street for concluding services at 1 p.m. The general public is invited to attend these memorial services to commemorate those who lost their lives in military conflicts.
The Broad Channel parade, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, will take place on Sunday, May 24 at 1:30 p.m. Participants will gather at the toll bridge plaza to march along Cross Bay Boulevard, with a stop at the West 17th Road Park, and then continue down to the memorial triangle at West 4th Road for concluding services.
The Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department will also have a separate memorial service starting at 10 a.m. in front of their firehouse on Noel Road to honor fallen comrades. The BCVFD will later join the VFW and American Legion's memorial parade. Residents are urged to come out and support the service men and women as they honor those that have been lost.
