Rockaway, BC Memorial Day Parades This Weekend
      Both Broad Channel and Rockaway have scheduled Memorial Day parades for the upcoming weekend to honor those men and women who made the supreme sacrifice for freedom. NPS Opens Beach Season This Weekend
      This weekend Gateway National Recreation Area kicks off the 2009 summer season. The swimming beaches at Jacob Riis Park will open and lifeguards will be on duty every day from 10 a.m.—6 p.m. Visitors are reminded that swimming is only permitted in guarded areas.

Pharmaceutical Co. Uses Rockaway For Advertisement
     Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca used the promenade on Beach 15 Street on Tuesday morning for a photo shoot for an advertisement for their migraine relief drug Zomig, according to a representative for the city's Department of Parks and Recreation. The permit from the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre, and Broadcasting states that James McEntee Photography would be working from Beach 9 to Beach 149 Streets from May 19 to May 21 with locations to be established by Rockaway's administrator for Parks and Recreation, Jill Weber. German Rotary Team Visits Rockaway Club
      The Rockaway Rotary Club hosted a Group Study Exchange (GSE) team from Germany during the first week in May. Accompanied by local club members, the team toured historic sites throughout New York and visited the Statue of Liberty.

RWA's Bike Tour Spotlights Rockaway's History
     Local historian Vivian R. Carter, left, gives a brief history of Rockaway before Rockaway Waterfront Alliance's bike tour of the peninsula begins last Saturday. Among the subjects she spoke about was the Cornell Cemetery, near New Haven Avenue, which is the resting place for Rockaway's first settlers and their families; and Hog Island, which was located off the peninsula at Beach 17 Street. It was washed away in heavy storms in the early 1900's.

100 PCT CC Support Local Police Performers
     On Thursday May 14, board members of the 100 Precinct Community Council, seniors from Saint Francis de Sales Golden Age Club and local Residents took a trip on the 100 Precinct bus to York College for the NYPD's annual talent show, where all of the performers are cops. The 100 Precinct Community Affair's unit was well-represented by Police Officers Brian McCabe and Joe Roberts, the "Kings Of Rock," who put on a terrific show for the audience. There were twenty five different acts in all.

TASA's Book Drive To Help Adolescent Parents
      With adolescent and teen pregnancy a continuing problem, a program in Far Rockaway is attempting to help these young people by assisting them in receiving various services. To that end, TASA (The Teenage Services Act Program) is running a book drive to collect new or gently used books for children and teenagers to improve their reading skills.

Local Politicians Celebrate CBB Victory
     Local state government officials and community leaders were on hand last Friday at the Broad Channel entrance of the Cross Bay Bridge to celebrate the preservation of the Rockaway and Broad Channel resident rebate program that was saved with the recent bailout of the MTA by state lawmakers. State representatives on hand included Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, Assemblymembers Audrey Pheffer and Michelle Titus, and State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. Also present were local community and civic leaders, all of whom loudly protested for months against the threat of once again paying to traverse the Cross Bay Bridge.

St. John's Episcopal Hospital Staff Beautifies Block
      The staff of St. John's Episcopal Hospital came together as the Second Annual Green Thumb Team on Thursday, May 14, 2009. The team planted hundreds of impatiens in the approximately 40 plots created when trees were planted on the streets surrounding the Hospital by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation last year.
