Praises Rockaway Ferry Service

Dear Editor,

Flashback to one year ago, May 12, 2008. A Nor'easter strikes just as the long-awaited Rockaway Ferry is making its first run to from Riis Landing to lower Manhattan via the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT). Elected officials, as well as the television and print media, are all on hand as local residents board the American Princess for its inaugural commute. Despite the weather, day one is a great success. The sun comes out the next day. The word gets out about the Peninsula's newest mass transit option, and the Rockaway BAT Ferry service takes off. Throughout the summer, additional weekend service is added.

Fast-forward to Tuesday, May 12, 2009. A first anniversary celebration is in the air.

The Princess' regular commuters, who continue to find the Rockaway BAT service the most reliable, comfortable, and safe way to get to work each day, are thankful to the Ferry's management and expert crew. The Ferry's ridership wants to remind all local commuters that the service is going strong, with morning runs at 5:45 and 7:45 from Riis Landing and afternoon departures from Pier 11 in Manhattan at 3:30 and 5:30. It's the affordable "green" alternative to driving.

Happy First Anniversary, American Princess, and here's to many more!
