Beach Volleyball League Counts Down to Opening Day
The final RBVL pre-season meeting was held on Wednesday, April 22 at 8:00 p.m. at the Kerry Hills Pub.
All 56 teams from last year will return and they signed up for another season of fun and games on the beach.
As of presstime, it looks like all four waiting list teams will be admitted for the 2009 season. Those captains will hear the final verdict any minute now. Keep those phone lines open. Early projections call for 8 different divisions with varying levels of skill. Look for 2008 champs, Freedhand's, Big Mahooshkas, The Wave/Kings Pharmacy, JG Electric, Kerry Hills Pub and www.thebh yc.com to come back and defend their titles.
Runners-up which include Sugar Bowl, McCarthy and Kelly, Connolly's, One Win Away, Sets on the Beach and Simon Says Sea Bar are nipping at their heels.
Remember that on Wednesday, May 20 will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time.
Hopefully the weather will cooperate as it did last year. Prospective new referees are welcome to come to the beach if you would like to be worked into our rotation.
You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.
Wednesday, May 27 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until August 8. On that Saturday, the league championships will be played, so keep your schedules clear. Every year it's a blast!
Finally, many people have expressed their preference to hold the annual RBVL Awards Dinner right after the season on a Friday night in August. We'd be glad to make the change from the traditional mid-September date if that's the way the majority of you feel.
Let us know what you think at the meeting or via e-mail. Respond quickly because dates and bookings have to be confirmed very soon.
It will only be a short few weeks before opening day arrives and there is still much to be done beforehand.
If you have any questions before the meeting, please call Patty Moule on her cell phone, 917-613- 0908 (Call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.).
See you on the beach on May 20.
