Let The Politicians Know

Dear Editor,

We are facing a very dangerous situation concerning the lack of protection along the new bike path on Cross Bay Boulevard.

We have to urge our neighbors to get involved and call their representatives.

We can't just stand by while our families are mowed down by reckless drivers on the stretch. We've pulled many knuckleheads and many innocent people from wrecks over the years along Cross Bay Boulevard.

It's always a tragedy and I always feel bad when an unsuspecting driver is involved in these accidents. Now, because of the new bike path, we are subjecting our children and friends to a very dangerous situation.

It's time we started to insist that our government take responsibility and install either "Jersey barriers" or similar devices along, at the very least, the west side of the six-lane road.

Barriers will at least keep the cars on the pavement. Cars are equipped with safety devices to keep the occupants safe. Bicyclist and pedestrians have no such protection.

The City of New York's answer to this problem has been to have the police department give more speeding tickets.

The police only catch one in a hundred speeders. That leaves plenty of others the chance to drive recklessly and crash.

I have discussed this with our new Councilman and have reached out to Congressman Weiner's office.

It's time, however, for every concerned citizen to take action and call their politicians, who do not take action unless they have to.

YOUR calls will force them to do something. Call all of the politicians listed on page four of this paper. Let them know that this matters to you and is a HUGE quality of life issue.

DAN MCINTYRE

CHIEF, BCVFD
