Unnecessary Repaving

Dear Editor,

I live on Beach 128 Street between Rockaway Beach Boulevard and the beach. Our street was repaved not more than two years ago. I realize that many streets in the neighborhood need repaving, but our block is NOT one of them. They just finished painting the Stop sign and school crossing signs from the last paving. They are ripping our street up and the agency handling the job is AWFUL. I've already called 311 and was told it was the Department of Design and Control. The whole project baffles my mind when the city is so strapped for money that they are threatening layoffs and major MTA hikes.

Anyway, my major concern is the lack of respect these workers have for the residents. At 6:30 this morning, I looked out my front window to see one of the workers relieving him on the tire of a backhoe that was parked in front of my home all night. Not something I need to wake up to. They honk horns and move trucks all over, but don't do any work until the residents start trying to get off their blocks to get their kids to school or to get to work. When I asked one of the workers when they were actually going to repave the street, he had no idea, "Maybe 2-3 weeks". So I'm guessing we won't have a street for part if not most of the summer. They ripped up the 140's 2-3 weeks ago, and they still aren't paved. What a waste of money!!!
