SFDS CYO Pee Wee Gold Wins Aviator Tournament

St. Francis Pee-Wee (Gold) boys had a stellar showing in winning the first Aviator Winter Basketball Tournament.

After a tough first round three-point loss to St. Helen's (A), the SFDS boys really stepped up their game and defeated five more teams to set up a title rematch with St. Helen's (A).

Each tournament game was hard fought, with the explosive offense of SFDS' Teddy Stathis, who in the five games averaged 12 points or better. He was supported on the floor by teammates Kyle Hoffman, Jack Watt, Dominic Savino, Mario Cimino and Matt Coletta.

This explosive play continued on defense also as James Carlton lead an effective SFDS 1-3-1 defense. The opposing team's point guard has very little chance to run his offense because of the pressure that Carlton applied. Andrew O'Sullivan, Matt Meade and James McFadden helped the defense by not allowing anything to get by them.

Highlights of the SFDS march to the championship included a 16-point game from Kyle Hoffman against St. Margaret's and Teddy Stathis also had a 16-point effort against OLMM.

These two combined help St. Francis win a very tight game against Blessed Trinity.

With less than 10 seconds to go, Hoffman hit a huge foul shot to put St. Francis up by one point. On OLMM's next possession, Stathis stole the inbound pass and scored a lay up to secure the win.

St. Francis came out of their bracket with one loss and had to beat St Helen's (A) team in order to set up the title rubber match.

Novice Lady Shamrocks

Start With Impressive Win

The St. Virgilius/St. Camillus novice girls' softball team opened the 2009 CYO softball season with a bang on Saturday, April 18, by pummeling St. Margaret's, 13-0 for their first win of the season.

The Lady Shamrocks jumped out to an early lead, and never looked back. The offensive explosion was led by Kaitlin Courtney, who went 2-4 with two doubles and 5 RBI's. Kelsey Trudden went 3-4 with 4 RBI's and included a double and a two-run walk off homerun.

Eireann Corbett went 2-2 with 3 runs scored, Molly Day went 3-3 with 3 runs scored, Chloe McEneany hit 3-3 with 1 RBI, Katie Corbett recorded a hit and an RBI, and Sydney McEneany went 2-3 with 1 RBI.

St. Margaret's was blanked by pitcher Kelsey Trudden, who had 10 strikeouts and allowed only two hits. Trudden's pitching gem was backed by fine defensive play by Carolyn Crocker, who had 2 putouts and an assist. Also recording assists in the field were Allison Moynihan, Krysten Kane, Amanda Clark, and Rebecca Bollman.

The Lady Shamrocks will play their home opener at BCAC Memorial Field this Saturday vs. St. Mary Gate of Heaven at 1:00 p.m. hard and won by 12 points. Stathis led all scorers, followed by Hoffman and Mario Cimino.

This now set up the Aviator championship game with both teams having a win against each other.

St. Helen's came out in a box and one defense and focused especially to hold Teddy Stathis from scoring. It worked in the first half as St. Francis was down 10-9.

In the second half, St. Francis took complete control of the game. St Helen's stayed with the box and one defense, which began to crumble as Savino hit three quick jump shots from top of the key.

St. Francis took the lead on the scoreboard and there was no looking back.

The boys kept the pressure on St. Helen's and gave up only four points in the second half, and won the Tournament.

The St. Francis Pee-Wee boys' team finished the season with a record of 23-5.

The five games that they lost were by only four points or less.

They played hard and had fun.
