Prior to the start of the Daily News Golden Gloves in January, Joseph Williams had no doubt that he could stand toe-to-toe with any opponent. The 20-year old boxer stands 5-9, and weighs 212 pounds. Most of the opponents he faced in this year's Daily News Golden Gloves in the superheavyweight novice class either weighed more or was taller than he is. More ... Trevis Hall stood in his corner, admittedly with nervous energy as he waited for the opening bell at the WAMU Theater at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, April 16. Hall's opponent, 17-year old Abdul Perry from Starrett City Boxing Club, had a similar idea. But when Perry came out of his corner once the bell rang like a house on fire. More ... St. Francis Pee-Wee (Gold) boys had a stellar showing in winning the first Aviator Winter Basketball Tournament. After a tough first round three-point loss to St. Helen's (A), the SFDS boys really stepped up their game and defeated five more teams to set up a title rematch with St. Helen's (A). More ... The Rockaway Ravens organization is currently holding registration for the cheerleading, football and soccer programs. The Ravens will hold their registration at 1425 Central Avenue, Suite 2, from Monday through Friday, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. More ... The opening of striper season was pretty much a blowout. Close to gale winds, rain and cold greeted me as I looked out my window at 4 a.m. Thursday was fishable so that we did. The trip resulted in a panoramic tour of the bay with one keeper bass in the low teens to show for it. More ... The 5th Annual Breezy Point Biathlon in memory of Billy Mullally will take place on Saturday, June 27 at 10:00 a.m. The race will start and finish at the Sugar Bowl, and feature a post-race party including music, along with complimentary food and cold beverages catered by Ludwig's Catering. As in the past, the course will be the Biathlon's patented 1.5-mile run, 3. More ... The Broad Channel Athletic Club will hold their opening day ceremonies for the 2009 little league season on April 25 at 10:00 a.m. The parade will kick off at 10:00am starting at the 17th road playground (17th Road and Cross Bay Boulevard). All players, coaches, and families should line-up at 9:30 a.m. More ... The St. Francis de Sales Sub-Novice Blue basketball team recently finished in second place at the St. Thomas Apostle Tournament. After losing its first game to St. Cecilia's 21-20 in a game that was well played by both teams, the SFDS Blue third grade team fought their way back by winning their next four games in the losers' bracket to make the championship game. More ... Last weekend saw the St. Virgilius/ St. Camillus Shamrocks open up there baseball season in the CYO Sub Novice Division with a game Saturday and again on Sunday morning. Saturday's contest had the Shamrocks on the road against Our Lady of Hope in there season opener. More ... Ropes swung. Legs and full bodies flew at the 29th Annual Rockaway Double Dutch Championships held last Saturday at the New York Department of Parks and Recreation's Sorrentino Recreation Center in Far Rockaway. The event came at a time when the art of Double Dutch is exploding in the city. More ... |
