Carter To Attend Art & Design
Following a very competitive studio art audition and portfolio presentation, local teen Betsy Carter has been invited to join this fall's freshman class at the prestigious High School of Art & Design, located at Second Avenue and 56 Street in Manhattan. Founded in 1936, Art & Design is the only public high school in New York teaching professional art, and there are 10 applicants for each seat at the school. Alumni include fashion designers Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs, singer Tony Bennett, playwright Harvey Fierstein, director Amy Heckerling, and animator Ralph Bakshi. Carter, presently an eighth-grader at Scholars' Academy, displayed her skill in creating computer generated art as early as kindergarten at PS 114, and her talent was further nurtured by art teacher Joan Diehl and local artist Stephen Yaeger. Betsy also enjoys Kelly Trpic's after-school art program at Scholars' Academy. Carter's proud parents are John Carter, a professor at Downstate Medical Center, and Vivian Rattay Carter, an advertising sales representative and columnist for The Wave.
