Our Kids Deserve Better

Dear Editor,

I read your paper with great interest because you address issues of interest to the residents of Rockaway. However, sometimes, I'm left puzzled by the managing editor HOWARD SCHWACH. There is no doubt that we have problems in our schools but calling Al Sharpton an arsonist and taking The National Action Network to task for joining with chancellor Kline to try and improve our schools is not helpful. I am a taxpayer in the city and have heard Randi Wiengarten speak many times. Unfortunately she never starts her diatribes with Once Upon A Time and end with Happily Ever After. The middle of her talk is fairy tale and I think your approach to curing our problems is a fairy tale too. We the taxpayers and the parents are tired of spending a billion dollars and getting nothing in return; especially the children who can read and write and do math in preparation for them to make a living for themselves and their children. Community school boards didn't work. Someone had to do something! Is this plan perfect? Of course not! It took years to get to where we are now. Unfortunately the children don't have many years to get out of this mess. So stop being a naysayer and add something other than criticism. The parents and the kids will thank you for it.

EDWARD MCCONWAY
