Arverne Woman Charged For Pocketing $80G

By Nicholas Briano

An Arverne woman gained more than salary from her job as a check cashing clerk and is now accused of stealing $80,000 from her Hempstead employer, according to police.

The check-cashing clerk, Tawana Gaines, 30, was charged last week with stealing $80,000 and falsifying company records to hide her crime, Nassau County police said.

For more than a year, Gaines, who lives at 410 Beach 54 Street, reportedly made fraudulent entries in the daily balance sheets, police said. After a police investigation, detectives arrested Gaines last Monday night at her job at Van Wyck Check Cashing, located at 57 South Franklin Avenue in Hempstead.

She was arraigned the following day on charges of grand larceny and falsifying business records. Her bail was set for $25,000 cash, or $50,000 bond.
