Shots Fired At Hammel Houses

Spent Shells, But No Victim Found
By Howard Schwach

A man returning to his car parked near Rockaway Beach Boulevard overnight found its hood damaged and its window smashed by a ricocheting bullet, police officials say.

Police officers responding to a radio call of criminal mischief at about 6:24 a.m. on April 13 found Codwell Coleman, 62, of Sumter. South Carolina looking at the damage of his 1995 Jeep Cherokee.

The car, which was parked on the east side of Beach 86 Street between the Freeway and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, had apparent damage to its hood and front windshield, officials say.

Responding officers established a crime scene and requested emergency services.

A canvass of the area, including the two hospitals in Rockaway, yielded no further property damage or victims.

An evidence search revealed six spent shell casings and a number of bullet fragments.

Detectives from the 100 Precinct Squad are investigating.
