Beach Volleyball League Final Pre-Season Meeting Scheduled

By Joe McGivney

The RBVL heats up last year as teams competed in the championship at Riis Park. The RBVL heats up last year as teams competed in the championship at Riis Park. In preparation for the volleyball season, a critical date is fast approaching. The final RBVL pre-season meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 22 at 8:00 p.m. at the Kerry Hills Pub.

Captains are required to bring the balance of their league fee and their uniform orders. Updated rosters should be submitted as well (Don't worry if you don't have all of the signatures).

If a captain is unable to attend he must send a representative (and the money) in his place. The forms are available on our website at www.rbvl. com.

All of last year's squads have paid deposits to insure their place for 2009. However, this is the moment of truth for all returning teams. Balances and rosters must be submitted at the meeting. Several new teams have been placed on a waiting list and are anxiously waiting to fill any unclaimed spots.

Early projections call for 6 or 7 different divisions with varying levels of skill. Look for 2008 champs, Freedhand's, Big Mahooshkas, The Wave/ Kings Pharmacy, JG Electric, Kerry Hills Pub and www.thebhyc.com to come back and defend their titles.

Runners-up, Sugar Bowl, McCarthy and Kelly, Connolly's, One Win Away, Sets on the Beach and Simon Says Sea Bar are nipping at the defending champions's heels.

Prospective new referees are welcome to come to the meeting if you would like to be worked into our rotation. You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL.

In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.

Remember, Wednesday, May 20 will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time. Hopefully the weather will cooperate as it did last year.

Wednesday, May 27 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until August 8. On that Saturday, the league championships will be played - keep your schedules clear. Every year it's a blast!

Finally, many people have expressed their preference to hold the annual RBVL Awards Dinner right after the season on a Friday night in August. We'd be glad to make the change from the traditional mid-September date if that's the way the majority of you feel.

Let us know what you think at the meeting or via e-mail. Respond quickly because dates and bookings have to be confirmed very soon.

It will only be a short few weeks before opening day arrives and there is still much to be done beforehand. If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule on her cell phone, 917-613-0908 (Call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.).

See you on April 22.
