SJEH Hosts 'Healthy Hearts For Kids'
For children who are overweight or physically inactive and their parents, finding guidance and assistance can be difficult. Healthy Hearts for Kids is a support group to help children and their families make healthier lifestyle choices. Led by a nutritionist and a pediatrician, the group helps design eating and activity plans for families, strategies to increase physical activity, and helps with behavioral changes.
According to the National Institutes of Health, childhood obesity is on the rise with the number of overweight children doubling over the past few decades. Obesity may lead to diseases like type 2 diabetes as well as bring a higher risk for heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. It also may cause social discrimination leading to low self-esteem and depression. Those who are concerned about their children should speak with their pediatrician. A program like Healthy Hearts for Kids can help to support the doctor's advice.
Healthy Hearts for Kids meets monthly at the Ambulatory Care Center of St. John's Episcopal Hospital Dialysis Conference Center, which is located at 327 Beach 19 Street, Far Rockaway.
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 29, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Dialysis Conference Center. For more information about Healthy Hearts for Children please call 718-869-8200.
