The Beach 20 Street pedestrian plaza will receive a considerable makeover, Councilmember James Sanders, Jr. said after he secured money for its revitalization this week from a Port Authority airport fund. Councilmember James Sanders, Jr. announced this week that he has secured a considerable amount of money to revitalize a pedestrian plaza in Far Rockaway.

The pedestrian plaza, located on Beach 20 Street, which cuts through from one side of the block to the other, will include new street lighting and benches, according to Sanders.

"This plaza has fallen into disrepair," Sanders said. "It has become an eyesore, but we are going to spruce it up and turn it into a gem."

The funding comes as part of $60 million granted to Queens from Port Authority to aid in development around airport affected areas. Sanders is the Chair of the Community Advisory Board that advises Mayor Bloomberg on decisions about how to spend the funding.

"It will be a boost to local business by making the area more attractive," he said. "And make it into a place where parents can sit and relax with their children after a long day of shopping."

The revitalized pedestrian plaza was envisioned as far back as 2005 by Sanders and local business owners as a way to jumpstart the community's image.
