Rockaway Beach Volleyball League Holds First 2009 Pre-Season Meeting

By Joe McGivney

Preparations for the summer 2009 Rockaway Beach Volleyball League season are underway. Patty Moule will again lead her troops into battle and try to top last year's very successful campaign.

Each year the first order of business is to find out which teams will be returning and which will not. Last year, 6 divisions of different playing (and imbibing) levels were fielded with a record-setting 56 teams.

On Wednesday evening, March 25 team captains and representatives convened at 8 p.m. for the first meeting of the year at Kerry Hills Pub. After five minutes of opening remarks, captains delivered their full rosters and $100 deposits to insure a spot in the league.

Prospective new teams also brought money and rosters and were placed on a waiting list for the upcoming season. If any veteran teams fold or fail to fulfill their obligations in a timely manner, teams will be pulled from the waiting list to fill out the league. Many players came out of hibernation and joined the festivities as well. It's always a sure sign of spring when both Punxatawny Phil and Rockaway Cubby see their shadow and come out to play.

The general feedback on the 2008 season has been very positive and the league is grateful for everyone's input and assistance. Always feel free to voice any of your personal likes and dislikes. We are always striving for improvement.

Prospective new referees should contact Patty or Denise if you would like to be worked into our rotation. You do not need to be a certified ref to work in the RBVL. In fact, many refs have been quite successful with a strong playing background (college and high school) and limited referee experience.

Captains can do us a big favor by emailing your vital information (name, address, phone numbers, e-mail address, team name) and the information for an alternate (or two) from your team. If the information is the same as last year, don't do a thing.

However, if you have a new e-mail address or you've elected a new captain, send the info to jmcgivney2@nyc. rr.com as soon as possible. As of today we've received no changes from you so we haven't changed a thing on our records.

You can mark a few additional special dates on your calendars already. We will hold the second and final meeting before the season on Wednesday, 4/22 at 8:00 PM at Kerry Hills. Uniform orders and payment in full ($650) is due at that time.

Any changes to your initial roster should be noted as well. Wednesday, May 20 will be our first night of volleyball at the beach. It will be a practice night for all and uniforms and schedules will be given out at that time.

Hopefully the weather will cooperate as it did last year. Wednesday, May 27 will be opening day and play will continue every Wednesday until 8/8. On Saturday, 8/8, the league championships will be played - keep your schedules clear. Every year it's a blast! Finally, it's never too early to plan for the RBVL Awards Dinner. By popular demand, this year's celebration will be moved from September to August, a week or so after the playoffs. Details will follow shortly.

It will only be 47 days before the "Real Desperate Housewives of NYC" and the "Bachelors" of Rockaway meet on the sands of Riis Park for yet another summer of fun. Opening day will arrive quickly and there is much to be done beforehand.

If you have any questions before the meeting please call Patty Moule at 917-613-0908 (Call between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.). See you on April 22.
