20-year old Joseph "Mack" Williams started his journey to the finals of the Daily News Golden Gloves super heavyweight at BB Kings in Manhattan on January 19.
Three months later, Williams, who represents the Rockaway Ropes Gymnasium, is one step closer to winning a boxing title. Williams won a 5-0 unanimous decision over Dominick Fuccillo at St. Raymond's Gymnasium in the Castle Hills section of the Bronx last Friday night.
The victory advances Williams to compete in the finals of the 201+ pound superheavyweight class at Madison Square Garden on April 17. illiams is expected to fight Patrick Newman, son of the well-known boxing referee Randy, and representing Gleason's Gym in Brooklwn.
Standing at 5-9 and weighing 215 pounds, Williams has continued to beat opponents who have a decisive height advantage. The 6-2 Fuccillo stood over Williams but did not have the speed to avoid his opponent's furious jabs. Williams cornered Fuccillo on the ropes with double jab combinations and was knocked down for a standing eight count in the second round. Williams continued to damage and floored his opponent for a standing eight count in the third round.
Those in his corner on April 17 will not only be trainer Anthony "Spark" McClendon, but also Kenyatta Harris who runs the Rockaway Ropes at the Ocean Bay Community Center at 57-10 Beach Channel Drive.
Harris is expecting a huge crowd to show up to support Williams when he fights at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden.
