Stimulus Money Good For Rockaway

The programs slated for Rockaway under President Obama's stimulus program are stunning. A new and expanded YMCA for Rockaway; boardwalk repair; a nature preserve covered with dunes; a new program to train locals for construction and health care industries; a new Shore Front Parkway that would run from Beach 108 Street east to Beach 32 Street and a new Transit Plaza in Arverne. If the money is used for those purposes by the city, Rockaway will once again have a worldclass boardwalk, a new and much-needed state-of-the-art recreation facility and a major east-west road that would replace the soon-to-be-closed freeway. The kicker is, will the mayor use the money as planned by the president and the state? Or, will he funnel it into some of his pet projects in Manhattan, Coney Island and elsewhere in the city? We are going to have to wait and see.
