KidsmART Responses, A Welcome For Two Exhibits
Rockaway Artists Alliance Commentary by Susan Hartenstein

Title: "Wine & Apples" Artist: Susan De- Castro Medium: Oil on canvas Title: "Wine & Apples" Artist: Susan De- Castro Medium: Oil on canvas RAA and our Education Department thank all the community-minded people who have taken the time to write letters of support in response to last week's column warning of the proposed elimination of the city's Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) Out-of-School Time funding of the kidsmART program. The threat to the very existence of kidsmART, because of the budget cut, is quite real. There would be NO kidsmART after school program after June 30, 2009.

Your words of eloquence to city officials, who include DYCD Commissioner Jeanne Mullgrav, create a cogent, persuasive and deeply personal case for continued funding of this highly effective, highly professional program on which the children and parents of our community have learned to rely and to trust. There truly is nothing else like it in the city. As your correspondence has testified, again and again, kidsmART changes the lives of children throughout this peninsula, of every economic and social stratum, forever; and for good.

Don't stop writing! Please continue to make the plea. As DYCD officials have, themselves, told RAA administrators, for whom they have such great regard, "The squeaky wheel gets oiled." Economic times are tough - we all know that. But if cuts are to be made, make the city aware that they mustn't cut from a program that gives return for the public dollar many times over; that fosters intellectually, emotionally, socially healthy children - our children, from one end of Rockaway to the other.

You Can Help: Write a letter to Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) Commissioner, Jeanne Mullgrav, asking to continue the Option II Out-of-School Time funding DYCD provides for Fort Tilden and PS 104Q kidsmART afterschool programs.

DYCD funds kidsmART $227,000 annually and kidsmART provides afterschool programming for over 500 children for FREE! These programs provide a safe space to children of working parents.

We also provide meaningful employment to many in our neighborhood, including local teens.
