Broad Channel Bits

By Liz Guarino

The weather has been fairly typical for this time of year—no late snow storms of anything out of the ordinary except the hailstones this past Sunday evening! The stones were about ¼ inch across and sounded a lot bigger; they were so loud some folks waited for them to come flying through the window. News reports might have mentioned them, but a lot of us heard not one word about them. Reports do mention the dryness of the weather we have had since January 1. The question arises: Is that bad, good or just different?

Help is needed from neighbors, both Broad Channel and Rockaway. An email arrived yesterday from a person who is making a documentary on Nunley's carousel. There were several carousels—one located in Broad Channel and one in Rockaway. (Other places also boasted them.) The Broad Channel carousel was in use at least from the 1930s through the 1950s. The documentary maker would like information about the Broad Channel and Rockaway carousels. It would be great if people who rode either or both were available to be interviewed by him. So—if there are folks out there who know well about these carousels, please send an email. If you aren't online, maybe the library computers could be put to this use. If that's not feasible, and you have no other way to contact me, send a note to the Wave. They will forward it to me.

Some words credited to a Greek proverb: 'A tongue's slip is a truth's revelation."

If you have material that you wish to appear in the column on a Friday, please get the item(s) to me by 9:30 a.m. on the Tuesday before the issue comes out.

Please sign your email or note; like the rest of the newspaper, I cannot publish info that comes without a name.
