New School Coming To PS 225

March 1, 2009, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein announced the opening of the Waterside Children's Studio School. This new elementary school, will share space with PS 225 and middle school, The Waterside School for Leadership, in Rockaway Park, Queens. The school will open in September 2009 with grades Pre-K - 3rd, adding 4th and 5th grades over the next two years. The school will be led by founding leader Dana Gerendasi. Ms. Gerendasi, a native of Queens, has been an educator for the past 10 years as a teacher, staff developer and curriculum writer.

The mission of the Waterside Children's Studio School is to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment where creativity and artistic expression are integral to the academic and emotional success of every child. Through music, drama, visual arts, technology, film, writing, and dance, ALL children will be empowered to grow academically, creatively and socially. They will acquire the critical thinking, personal integrity and self esteem that go beyond the classroom walls. As a community, the students will take pride and ownership of their school and celebrate all of their accomplishments

Using the Workshop Model, the staff will incorporate into the NYS standards based curriculum Balanced Literacy/Math, hands on science and project based social studies. They will integrate all aspects of the arts throughout the instructional areas to build a bridge between content and understanding. Additionally, the school will have specialty teachers and ongoing residency instructors teaching music, drama, visual arts, technology/ media arts, dance and physical education through school based athletic centers. Families will feel like they are a part of their child's learning by attending the schools many academic workshops so they can better support their children. Families and the community will enjoy the ongoing school exhibitions and performances, Family Fridays, Family Arts Nights, Parents as Learning Partners, and many other programs and activities.
