St. Camillus/St. Virgilius Winter Basketball League Completes Another Successful Season
The St. Camillus/St. Virgilius Winter Basketball League ended another fun and exciting year. This year, there were more than 240 players participating in the action. The league hopes every one of these players had fun, and learned some of the important values and principles that we try to teach.
Noteworthy, this year was the fact that the boys' basketball program had the first female player ever. Taylor Butigan was the young lady who broke this barrier. Not only did she play, Butgian had an outstanding year, and was one of the top players in the league. The year ended with some great championship games with almost every one of them coming right down to the wire. Everyone was on the edge of their seats for the Junior Boys championship. The game was about a close as it could get, with the winner eking out a two-point victory.
The Senior Boys champions had to first play their way into playoffs, since they finished the season in last place. They went on to win a semi-final game against the league's top team, and then prevailed in the finals with a three-point victory.
This team showed everyone what can be achieved if you persevere and simply never give up. The championship game also went right down to the final seconds, where the Senior Boys were able to hold on to a two-point victory.
The Junior Girls' championship game wasn't quite as close, but may have been the most fun to watch. The young girls' demonstrated such great enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and they just love to play.
Special thanks to the volunteers who ran the various programs: Kathy Marquardt, Guy Nevirs, and Calvin Stanley. Thanks to the sponsors and parents who supported our program. Last, but certainly not least, a thank you to Father Richard Ahlemeyer who made all this successful season possible.
