Peggy Boyle Championship Begins This Weekend At SFDS
After three weeks of play, the 11th Annual Peggy Boyle Tournament comes to a roaring conclusion this weekend.
Saturday's schedule at St. Francis de Sales (Beach 129 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard) begins at 1:00 p.m. with a rematch of the Pee Wee Diocesan championship as Blessed Trinity White takes on Blessed Trinity Green.
The winner will face the hosts, St. Francis de Sales, in Sunday's championship at 2:15 p.m.
Another sibling squabble follows the Battle of Breezy Point on Saturday, as St. Francis Gold faces St. Francis Blue in the Subnovice Division game at 2:00 p.m. Good Shepherd awaits the winner on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
The 3:00 p.m. game on Saturday is a Bantam matchup between St. Francis and Our Lady of Hope. Diocesan champion St. Adalbert gets the survivor on Sunday at 4:45 p.m.
In the Novice division, St. Mary Gate of Heaven plays Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Their opponent will be either Good Shepherd or Long Beach Catholic on Sunday.
St. Francis will look to add to their Diocesan title in Sunday's 3:30 p.m. championship game. The Rookie championship is already set with another St. Francis-Our Lady of Hope pairing on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Both days will end with Intermediate games.
On Saturday, St. Margaret squares off with the winner of Wednesday's game between St. Patrick and St. Francis. Blessed Trinity will be well rested for Sunday's championship at 7:15 p.m. that will close the tournament.
Once again, there will be a special awards ceremony scheduled for Sunday, immediately following the Novice championship at approximately 4:45 p.m. The awards will recognize a player on each St. Francis team who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship, character throughout the year and honors great players and coaches from previous years.
The Boys Diocesan playoffs continue on Saturday and Sunday. Last weekend the SFDS Boys Novice, Rookie, and Intermediate teams advanced, while the Pee Wee Blue and Gold, and the Bantams lost tough games. The Pee Wee Gold lost twice this past weekend.
In Saturday's game in the Aviator Tournament, the boys lost a close game to St. Helen, 25-22. Teddy Stathis led all scorers with 16 points. Kyle Hoffman and Matt Coletta scored the other six points for SFDS.
Last Sunday was a game that both St. Francis and St. Kevin played like the final of the NCAA tournament. Neither team could gain a comfortable lead, but time ran out on S.F.D.S as St. Kevin won 31-30. This was a fourth grade play-off game and 61 points were scored. Stathis led S.F.D.S. with 14 points along with scoring contributions by Mario Cimino, Dominic Savino, (Hulk) Coletta and Hoffman.
James Carlton played an outstanding defense despite the injury to his ankle. Jack Watt, Andrew O'Sullivan and James McFadden also played both ends of the court with a 110 percent effort.
The Pee Wee Blue fell as well to St. Stans of Ozone Park, 19-11. The top seeded novice boys got underway with a 36-19 win over a scrappy team from St. Stans of Greenpoint with outstanding games from Kyle Connolly and Eion Reen. Their big matchup comes next with St. Stans of Maspeth on Sunday, 1:00 p.m. at Gate of Heaven.
The Bantams faced a tall squad from St. Teresa and held their own in the first half before falling behind by double digits. A late rally could not quite overcome the deficit as they lost 41-37.
The Rookies played well defeating St. Sebastian on their home court and now face defending champion St. Gabriel on Sunday, 1:00 p.m. at St. Cecilia.
The Intermediates combined excellent outside shooting from Charlie Marquardt and Jack Hurley, swooping drives by Jimmy Wolfer, and the inside toughness of Ryan Kilgallen and Ricky Comis to forge a 61-47 win over Sacred Heart. Rockaway rival Blessed Trinity is next on Sunday for the Intermediates.
The game will be at 6:00 p.m. at St. Gregory.
Come out and watch the Peggy Boyle Tournament action this weekend at St. Francis de Sales. And root on the SFDS teams on the road in the Diocesan playoffs.
