Alfred DeBetham, a longtime Far Rockaway resident, died March 7. He was 78.
DeBetham was born in Manhattan. He moved to the Rockaways in 1938. He was a Master Sergeant in the US Army from 1947 to 1953, served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He was a surveyor and home improvement contractor. He was also a former member of New Hope Baptist Church and the organizer of the Boy's Brigade.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Leotta; father, Wilfred; and brothers, David and Bunny.
DeBetham is survived by his wife Francine; daughter, Simone; grandsons, Jo-el and Justin; brothers, Rudolph and Leroy (Bess); sister, Catherine (Edward); aunt, Helen Bonner; sisters-in-law, Joann, Mery Ellyn and Betty; brothers-in-law, John Jr., David and ZQ Abdu Shahid.
