Bloomberg Hasn't Done Anything,Yet He Is Grand Marshal
I can't think of one thing Mayor Bloomberg has done for the Rockaway Community in his tenure as Mayor. We are a community that is underserved by the city of New York. When I look at year-round recreational facilities for children and families, I look at what other parts of the city have and wonder why we can't have what they have. When I look for theaters, concert halls, great universities, museums, botanical gardens, municipal piers or even maybe a zoo I have to look at other parts of the city. I wonder why Rockaway can't have any of the good things.
What I see in Rockaway is a preponderance of public housing and nursing homes. Many in the Rockaway community have struggled for over 20 years to get a year-round recreational facility built to give our children an alternative to alcohol, drugs, idleness, and gangs.
The community is to get a YMCA in return for the development of public land in Arverne. The Community Board wrote the Mayor to tell him the planned YMCA was inadequate to meet the needs of our isolated community. The Borough President agreed and wrote a letter to the Mayor.
He was contacted by every elected official from our U.S. Senators, to our Congressman, to our state elected officials, to our City Councilmen asking to expand the facility to be able to meet our needs.
What was the Mayor's response to this outpouring of support? He just ignored us. I have some ideas on what would be appropriate actions to take against our Mayor. What I would not do is make him grand marshal of our St. Patrick's Day Parade. It surely sends the wrong message.
I would encourage my neighbors to let the Mayor know how they feel about our community being ignored by him. If you do not feel comfortable verbalizing your dissatisfaction, I would suggest just turning your backs on him as he walks our streets in the parade. I feel this would be appropriate action toward a man who has turned his back on us.
