Introducing Rockaways' Newest Middle School

Michael R. Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein recently announced the opening of the Waterside School for Leadership, a middle school designed to be a center of academic excellence.

This new middle school will share space with PS 225 and another elementary school in Rockaway Park. The school is a 6-8 model led by school leader, Linda Munro.

Munro, a NYC native, has more than 10 years of educational experience. She earned a master's of education in administration and supervision from Columbia University and is currently an aspiring principal with the NYC Leadership Academy.

The Waterside School for Leadership is dedicated to serving the diverse scholars of New York City. With a school mission that recognizes the commitment to its students, the school created a collaborative and supportive educational environment where college bound scholars in grades 6-8 are leaders of their lives, learning and community. Waterside fosters a sense of community, an understanding of leadership and a commitment to ethical behavior, all of which encourages students to become positive change agents in high school, college and beyond.

More importantly, Waterside offers students a unique educational experience with small class size, advisory classes, differentiated instruction and support. With the belief that learning and creativity can thrive in a well-disciplined and structured environment, Waterside works to create a community where all students feel safe and secure. Students are held to high academic and behavioral expectations. Students at Waterside engage in appropriate, scholarly behaviors and rigorous leadership preparation courses. These courses are designed to help students develop critical skills like communicating effectively, collaborating, planning proactively, team-building and more. Students also build civic leadership skills by interacting with elected officials and addressing community issues.

In preparation for high school and beyond, students participate in collegeprep academic classes, community service projects and service learning activities.

Parents and family members are always welcome at Waterside. Leadership opportunities and family workshops will ensure that the ideas and suggestions of the community are heard.

The school is set open in September 2009, with an estimated 60 students in grade 6. Each year an additional grade will be added until reaching full enrollment of approximately 210 students in grades 6-8.
