Village Academy Set To Open In September

The New York Department of Education Office of New Schools recently approved the opening of Village Academy Middle School, in order to better service the needs of the students and their families in the Far Rockaway community. The school will be housed in the MS 53 building located at 10-45 Nameoke Street. The school will accept sixthgrade students in September 2009 and add an additional grade each year, to eventually accommodate grades 6 through 8. Students who are zoned for MS 53, in District 27, will be eligible to attend Village Academy.

The mission of the school is to educate the entire family and create stronger family units that will facilitate success in students in order to prepare them for higher education and life as productive citizens. Families will be offered a variety of programs such as health and aerobics classes, GED courses, family literacy classes, home-buying seminars, financial management classes, and career counseling.

Students will receive small group instruction along with academic intervention and enrichment based on their specific needs. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a mastery program that will allow them to develop their knowledge in areas such as technology, creative writing, journalism, debate, music, dance, and sports.
