A sanitation worker died on the job yesterday morning when he collapsed while working in Far Rockaway, according to sanitation officials. Stephen Dixon, 61, reportedly collapsed from an apparent heart attack while working around 10:45 a.m. He died shortly after arriving at St. John's Episcopal Hospital. More...

Kenneth and Chaya Kirchein of Rockaway Park have announced the engagement of their son Brian to Stacey Allen, daughter of Ronald and Eleanor Allen of East Hampton. The couple met at SUNY College at Oneonta, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications. Stacey received a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics. The couple lives in Salisbury, Maryland where Brian, a Beach Channel High School graduate, is a patient account representative for a medical billing company and Stacey is a Registered Dietitian for Peninsula Regional Medical Center. The couple announced their engagement February 7 and are planning a January 2010 wedding in Salisbury, MD. More...

Surveyor/Contractor
Alfred DeBetham, a longtime Far Rockaway resident, died March 7. He was 78. DeBetham was born in Manhattan. He moved to the Rockaways in 1938. He was a Master Sergeant in the US Army from 1947 to 1953, served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He was a surveyor and home improvement contractor. More...
