Far Rockaway Fire Quickly Extinguished

By Howard Schwach

A fire in several shipping containers stored in the front yard of a single-family home at 1036 Beach 22 Street in FarRockaway was quickly extinguished by local firefighters, a New York City Fire Department spokesperson says.

Fire Department sources say that the first notification for the fire was called to the 911 emergency system at 9:10 p.m. on Tuesday night. He addednthat several calls were received by the system, each of a different location, causing some confusion and extending the response time.

Three engines and two ladder units responded to the fire initially, but it was eventually declared an "all hands" fire by on-scene officials, which brought several additional fire units from Battalion 47 to the scene.

Sources say that the home was untouched by the fire, but that several shipping containers and their undisclosed contents were destroyed in the fire.

The fire was declared under control at 9:24 p.m.
