Scholars Academy Holds Inaugural Basketball Game
February 25, 2009 was a historic day for The Scholars' Academy, as the PSAL boys' varsity team had their inaugural basketball game. The Scholars' Academy Seawolves varsity basketball team is coached by John Coscia. Even though the Seawolves have been given varsity developmental status, their roster is made up of all freshman and sophomores. The team hopes to receive full varsity status for next season.
The Scholars' Academy Seawolves played their first official PSAL game against he High School of Applied Communication Eagles. The Eagles are also of developmental varsity status; however, their roster is made up of seniors and juniors.
The game started off with a fast and energetic pace with the Seawolves and Eagles trading a few buckets to begin the game. The Scholars' Academy Seawolves sophomore center, Lawrence Johnson, scored the first points ever for the school in making a 15 - foot jump shot from the left elbow.
This basket marks the first official points scored in the Scholars' Academy history. The Seawolves fought hard and never backed down even when they fell behind. The top three scorers for the Seawolves were sophomore Lawrence Johnson with 14 points, sophomore Rahul Harold with 10 points, and freshman Liam Reen with 10 points.
The Scholars' Academy took a huge step in the development of a successful sports program. This step was just the first of many to come in bringing an organized and successful sports program to The Scholars' Academy.
