SFDS Novice Girls Win Title In Exciting Fashion
The St. Francis de Sales Novice Girls won the Diocesan Championship in a thrilling title game edging Our Lady of Hope, 26-24. The St. Francis girls raced out to a 6-point first quarter lead led by "Birthday Girl" Kathryn Gibson and Shannon Rochelle.
SFDS would lead by 4 points at the half as Tess and Jackie Gallagher, Ryan Ward, and Emily Carlton controlled the tempo. Bryn Nagel, Julianna De- Silvia, and Justine Twomey handled the Hope press.
The third quarter remained a 4-point St. Francis lead including a stunning basket made from her knees by Shannon Rochelle.
In the fourth quarter, the excitement in the packed McClancy gym was tremendous! Jenna McCann, Lauren Peters, and Lauren Guidarelli battled constantly under the boards as the game teetered between two and four points. However, St. Francis never trailed and the girls held off a frantic final push by the Hope girls.
Rochelle, who scored a game high 8 points, caught the final St. Francis inbound pass as time expired. The SFDS girls and their family were sent into a screaming hysteria. Coach Randy Neiswenter would like to thank assistant coach Dan Twomey, Laura Rochelle, and all the girls for an awesome ending to a great season.
