Laborers Recruit Apprentices
The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Asbestos, Lead and Hazardous Waste Laborers, Local 78, will conduct recruitment from February 25 through March 10 for 50 skilled construction craft laborer apprentices.
Applications will be available at the local, 42-53 21 Street, Long Island City, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Wednesday during the recruitment period.
Applications will be given by the training facilities at the parking lot entrance.
The committee requires that applicants be at least 18 years old; have a high school or general equivalency diploma; be physically able to perform the work required as determined by a physical examination required by federal regulations (OSHA) given at the expense of the Joint Apprenticeship Board; be able to lift an aggregate of 94 pounds for 30 feet and re-stack to a height of approximately 54 inches; load with a shovel one-half cubic yard of material into a wheelbarrow, wheel it 30 feet and deposit into a container; work at heights of 50 feet or greater and in confined spaces and in extreme hot or cold temperatures; applicants must have a valid New York State ID; and applicants must be a resident of the five boroughs or Long Island.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.
Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.
Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.
Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
