St. Camillus CYO Basketball Gears Up For Playoffs
On January 31, the St. Camillus/St. Virgilius eighth grade boys basketball team played St. Stans at home and suffered a tough loss, 45-41. Sean O'Connell led the S.C.V. squad with 14 points and Greg Charles chipped in with 9.
On February 6, S.C.V. traveled to St. Teresa Avila to face the best team in the division. The game was close throughout, but the S.C.V. boys lost a heartbreaker by 4. O'Connell led S.C.V. with 24 points. Charles scored 11 points and Kajeen Williams added 7. The team's improvement was quite evident since they lost to the squad by double figures early in the season.
On February 8, the boys traveled to Brooklyn to face St. Saviour and look to uphold their undefeated record in the Interparish Basketball League.
S.C.V. would lose 48-45 in a close contest. Although he played sick, and forced to leave the game in the fourth quarter, O'Connell led S.C.V. with 15 points. Charles had 9 points and Shakury Reynolds had 7.
On February 15, the eighth grade boys went up against St. Bernadette in an IBL game. The team came away with a lopsided 52-20 victory. O'Connell led the scoring with 14 points while Tristan Neviers scored 13.
The next week, the S.C.V. Intermediate boys faced Our Lady of Guadalupe in another IBL faceoff. SCV came away with a 42-32 victory. The team's IBL record stands at 6-1 with then in sole possession of first place. Their CYO regular season is over, and they face St. Cecelia of Brooklyn in the first round of the playoffs on February 28.
On January 31, the S.C.V. ninth grade boys kept their winning streak alive with a 62-41 win over the 9-3 St. Matthias. The team was lead by Jyshawn Allen with 14 points, Kareem Padgett had 12 and Nakief Cross contributed with 7 points.On February 7, the boys defeated St. Helens, 53-37. The team finished the regular season at 11-3 and will be in the playoffs starting on March 7.
