Sand Pumping And Pollution

Dear Editor,

I regret to inform you that the ongoing sand pumping in Far Rockaway is clearly resulting in contaminated beaches toward the west end of the Rockaway peninsula. Oily residue and other sediments are being dislodged from the ocean surface and being carried by the long shore current that runs between the Far Rockaway Inlet and Breezy Point. Evidence of this contamination can be clearly identified on Far Rockaway, Rockaway Beach, Belle Harbor, Neponsit and Breezy Point beaches. For this reason, the sand pumping exercise should probably be suspended. Since this is unlikely, I would hope that the ACOE would send a representative to inspect the west Rockaway beaches.
