Stella Maris Secures State, Diocesan Playoff Berth
The Stella Maris Varsity basketball team finished its regular season off in style by defeating St. Saviour, 53-34. The win broke a tie for third place in the CHSAA Brooklyn-Queens Division II and secured a trip to Buffalo for the Lady Flippers, where they will compete in the Girls' Catholic High School State Tournament.
The regular season ended with Stella Maris, St. Saviour and Bishop Loughlin all tied for second place. The Flippers had defeated the Lions twice, Loughlin had defeated St. Saviour twice and Saviour had defeated Stella twice so none of the League tie-breaker rules could be employed. All schools agreed to a draw wherein the winner would receive the second place spot and the remaining teams would play a game for the third and fourth place spot. Bishop Loughlin won the draw so the Pandas and Lady Flippers played the game.
Stella Maris took control in the first quarter, going up 12-2. Frosh sensation Ashley Raaf led the way with 5 first quarter points, 2 steals and 2 assists. Saviour came out for the second period and answered with a 5-0 run closed the difference to 12-7. Raaf answered in her own way with two baskets to give SM some breathing room. Senior sharpshooter Stephanie Quick (hot off a 26-point and 7 three-pointers in the Flippers' previous game), who added her own touch with 3 treys in the quarter. At half time, SM was up 30-12 and edged SS 23-22 in the second half.
The game's high scorer was Stephanie Quick with 24 points. Raaf added 11 points, 6 steals and 7 assists. Eliana Howell chipped in with 7 points and 15 rebounds. Flipper Footnotes: thanks to the SM faculty and administration for making the trip to Bishop Kearney and big thanks goes to the school's athletic director and jv team for staying late and offering their school as a neutral site for the game. Seniors: rage, rage, rage.
