Transit Unions Endorse Lew Simon
TWU Local 100 and Amalgamated Transit Union Local Division 1056 have announced their endorsement of Lew Simon for City Council in the 32nd Council District in the special election on February 24. TWU represents 34,000 bus and subway workers in most of the Transit Authority. Amalgamated Transit Union represents 2,500 men and women who operate and maintain buses for the Queens Division of the MTA.
The TWU is currently fighting the MTA budget that would slash service and threaten the future of the system. The TWU Political Action committee coordinates lobbying campaigns and direct election work through phone banking, door to door canvassing and other get out the vote activities.
Simon has made transportation a key part of his program. He favors reopening the Rockaway Beach line of the LIRR, a super A train with limited stops, express bus service to and from Manhattan until 11 p.m. and on weekends. Simon says, if elected he will request assignment to the Transportation Committee of the City Council. He pledges to work closely with the unions and with the thousands of local residents.
Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1056 President Ed Figueroa said, "Lew M. Simon has consistently fought for the rights of every hardworking man and woman in Queens, NY and is especially recognized by us, among others, for being a strong friend of labor.
"Mr. Simon has participated in our public hearings and voiced his opinions at the MTA's proposed cuts and reductions of services, possible layoffs and which will further add to the declining economy and hardships we are all forced to endure … "
