Economic Woes Hit Trade Shows
News Events/Travel Editor/Host • WNYX - TV Morning News • 12:00 noon on UHF Chs. 35 & 26 Monday - Friday

Among other things, I do try to cover most of the trade shows at the Javits Center and I have been noticing a big drop in attendance; especially at the New York Times Travel Show. Masses moved in to converge upon the Comic.Com, possibly because it is low, low maintenance. Currently I am touring through the International Toy Fair where I found many affordable toys such as: American Paper Optics where you see Fireworks, Hearts, Holiday Dreams with every spec you wear; the Marshmallow Fun Co. has rifles, Bow and Arrows, etc. that shoot marshmallows. Kauzbots are toy robots that inspire action and support " kauses" by giving back a percentage of profits to children's foundations; Fish in a Flash, "Toyops" or Triops, Inc., where you grow your own fish from eggs that hatch in a tank in just six weeks and can reach 2 inches long; toys are there for a child's learning and talent development, such as Liso LeLeu's Art Theatre Studio, Puppet Show Play Sets: Hand puppet and tote bag, DVD, Play Story, coloring book with crayons. However, toys are not just for kids. There is a Maduff (spelling?) Doll for all stockbroker losers to hammer away at to rid frustration. This is a fun, fun show and I will be going back.

At the NRF Retail Show Design Studio retailers from all over flocked to the Javits Center to learn more about the new designs to attract retailers and buyers and consumers to buy brand products. Bloomingdales, for the first time, opened a new store in Dubai and called upon the NRF for their help. These store designs will help shoppers sit up and take notice. They will use low tech, hi tech and no tech strategies for creating meaningful designs. Many of these experts have theater backgrounds, some who did large scale projects for Universal Studios and Kennedy Space Center, Broadway shows, etc. Realities' clients list consists of: Foot Locker, Radio Shack, Time Warner, Bank of America, etc. While the economic slump is felt everywhere these people are creating the images to attract the consumers to the brands.

Gabarron Foundation at 149 East 38 Street ... Carriage House Art Center held its opening reception in honor of Marin Luther King, Jr. You must stop over there to see all the beautiful art work. The Spanish Art Exhibition is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Times Building, Australia ... Expo. Australia seems to be attracting people from all over the world. It is the new hot spot with Melbourne such a vibrant city with narrow streets and hidden cafés and rivers, diverse marine life and Taronga Zoo, the famous Opera House. The finest foods and wines. Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef luxurious beach resorts and direct flights from LAX.

The New York International Gift Show is in town and it is one of the biggest shows to hit New York City. It is not only at the Javits Center, but Pier 92 and 7 West building, on 34 Street. Buyers and retailers fill their halls looking for the unique and attractive items in gift wear. I came across precious purses decorated with jewels and fine fur that may be worn as a clutch or worn on a belt. These mothers had a nice story behind their business. Their two daughters were deaf and met each other in a school for deaf children and merged and went into the purse business together. Their two daughters have since graduated with honors from college though both are still deaf with- out their "equipment," but they are doing well and succeeding in life for sure. It is a beautiful story and it is in the "BAG" for them and their mothers. The name of their business is "Gutzees" in Englewood, NJ. And, you sure have to have "guts" to be as successful as they are. Media attended the Make A Wish Foundation Party at Bruno Jamais Restaurant, 241 East 81 Street to meet and interview Alex McCord and Simon van Kemp from "Reel" Housewives.

The Netherlands had a big bash at MoMA for their current exhibitions. The Wedding Salon at the Empire Rooftop brought together media and trade to thank them for sales and promotions. Couples are being pampered and pampered more through travel and wedding ceremonies and honeymoon deals, clothes, dinearounds and more. The Wedding Salon from massages to marriage.

The Fiji Islands had a sit down dinner at the Grand Hyatt where they presented their new deals and offered FEE marriage for a 7 night stay. Did you see my TV Show on Fiji a few years back? It is a piece of paradise. If you win the raffle or lotto that is the place to go. BULA!www.Air Pacific.com

The Edwardian Hotels held their reception at the Edison Penthouse. They have a new and beautiful May- fair Hotel in London with reasonable rates: wwwhemayfairhotel.com.uk

Did manage to pop down to Kennedy's a few weeks ago and was pleased to see Bobby Keiley looking well and happy. Missed some of the other "Corner Bachelors," but maybe now they will show up more that spring is on the horizon.

Bye, bye to Winter Woes. Keep healthy and light of spirit and keep busy, because that will bring you joy
