BKHS Track Team Shines At BK-Queens Championship
Congratulations to Bishop Kearney High School track co-captain Sarah Donahue (Belle Harbor) on being crowned the 2009 Brooklyn/Queens 3000-meter champion. Donahue, also known "The Seaside Breeze", was on a mission to win the 15-lap race. From the sound of the official starter's gun to her final sprint to the finish line, Donahue lead the entire way and setting a personal record in the process.
Team co-captain "Queen Mary" Gallagher (Belle Harbor) ran an outstanding race in the 1500-meter race in finishing in third place and securing additional team points.
Junior Meghan "Hollywood" Hayes made her debut in the 1000 meter race and was up to the challenge. Meghan ran a smart tactile race, and a blazing kick helped to capture third place honors and another four points overall for the team. Senior Patti Ann "Fastquez" Vasquez also made her debut in the 1000-meters and ran a very competitive time for her effort.
The final medal winning performance by the Kearney runners was in the 2-mile relay event. The team comprised of Kaitlyn "The Jet" Touhey, Belle Harbor Sarah, Meghan and Sophomore Jacqueline Nwabueze captured the third place medal with a nail biting finish that had the crowd on their feet. It was a terrific job by the entire team and good luck to the team next week in the city championships.
