Last Chance For 'Heritage'; Two Calls To Artists
Commentary By Susan Hartenstein

Rockaway Artists Alliance Rockaway Artists Alliance First up, congratulations once again to RAA's Education Director, Christine Mullally and Program Director, Marina Callaghan for receiving the Graybeards' Special Recognition Award, this past Saturday, for their work at RAA's kidsmART program. We at RAA know how much the program means to the community and how dedicated Mullally, Callaghan and their entire staff are to making a difference in the lives of all our children. Many have given their hearts and souls over the years to make the program what it is. It's lovely to have an organization as equally dedicated as the Graybeards are, recognizing that fact.

Dues are due. No, not a jingle. A reminder to RAA members and those considering joining this respected artist/teaching organization that membership is up for renewal. Still one of the best bargains in town, RAA membership for 2009 is $35. What are the advantages of membership? Glad you asked. You will receive the E-Newsletter, which showcases upcoming events at RAA's galleries, often even before you read them in this column. At our gatherings, which include our monthly meetings, you can share information and creative ideas with your RAA peers and the art community. You may post your latest professional news in the e-newsletter, reaching other members and supporters in the community and beyond. For years, members have spanned the metropolitan area and the country. You will be eligible to enter our member exhibitions that include "Gifted," the annual holiday show.

With your help RAA can continue hosting events such as our monthly exhibits, Open Mic Night, the Halloween Extravaganza, meetings featuring guest speakers, Gallery Sitter's Events, classes and more. With your membership you can enjoy friendships and networking with artists while supporting the arts in a community that would otherwise be without these terrific events.

Calls to Artists: "Color Mix Of Quilt and Artwork" is open to quilts and artwork of all media. Artists are invited to submit colorful compositions in any theme. Quilts may be of any theme, design, size or materials. A unique approach to a traditional form is always welcome. Artwork may include, but is not limited to, watercolor, photography, sculpture, writing, mixed media, assemblage and music. The RAA seeks the unlimited vision and talent of each artist to make this a one-of-a-kind show.

"Wine & Dine": the art of food and drink and the many variations thereof. This juried exhibition is open to all media including sculpture, painting, photography, cartoon, kinetic art, music, poetry and prose. The more imagination the artist can bring to images of the everyday and elegant table, the better the exhibition.

Deadline for submission for both exhibits is March 11, 2009. The entry forms and prospectuses are available at the RAA office and online at www. rockawayartistsalliance.org

The next Writers Group meeting is February 15 in sTudio 6 Gallery, RoCA. These gatherings have become very lively, informative and great fun for those of us who love to see words put together in most interesting ways. Bring a friend or even a curious acquaintance. Bring writing news and opportunities to share with the group. And bring work to read or writing ideas you'd like to discuss and on which you would welcome some feedback. Dan Guarino, leader of the group, promises warm drinks to add to the stimulating conversation. CU@RoCA.
