Bar Beatdown Sends Two To Hospital

By Howard Schwach

In what police are terming "a typical Rockaway bar story," two local men were badly beaten on the street after leaving a bar where they were involved in an altercation with a group of unidentified men.

Police say the fight started in a Rockaway Beach Boulevard bar at about 2:30 a.m. on February 1, but say they are not sure which bar was the genesis of the beating.

Sources say the two men, identified as James Coyne of Beach 102 Street and Michael Regan, of Beach 130 Street, were asked to leave the bar. When they got onto the street at Beach 110 Street, however, they were met by a group of men wielding baseball bats and pipes.

Police sources say that two eyewitnesses, a woman on her way home and a cab driver, observed the assault and provided police with details.

They say that the group of men beat Coyne and Regan about the head and body for what seemed like minutes and then fled the scene.

The two men were taken to Jamaica Hospital Center, where both reportedly remain at press time.

Both are expected to fully recover from the injuries they received in the beating.

Police sources say they have no suspects in the beating and that no arrests have been made.
