'The Trolls', Kids Next Craze?

By Jon Minkoff

Most people have a job and a passion and few can call them one and the same. A longtime Rockaway resident, Richard Sirgiovanni, is trying to combine those two realms for himself with a cartoon show for children ages three through nine.

Sirgiovanni's job is in advertising and marketing. His credentials include graduating from the School of Visual Arts. For years he has created freelance cartoons, but what he's done that most people would know is to compose the

Gotta Go to Mo's, Gotta Go to Model's" jingle. Now Sirgiovanni is combining his passion for cartooning with his passion for music in what he calls, "The Trolls." The premise of the show is that the trolls were not always trolls; long ago they were men who played music. However, the people of that time condemned their music as that of the devil and transformed them into trolls.

A thousand years have passed and one of these diminutive mythological creatures has figured out a way to make his fellow trolls look human so they can play their music today when it is appreciated.

Sirgiovanni's musical partner in this endeavor is Joe Refano. Before the two took their concept to network executives, they sought talent for the voices of the trolls. This talent came in the form of reputable old rockers that include Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits, Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees, Keith Emerson of ELP, Eric Burdon of The Animals and Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones. For those parents who want to stay ahead of the curve and tell their kids, "I knew about 'The Trolls' before it was cool," they can see some of the show's concepts at http://www.you tube.com/ watch?v=_lMqfcZp8Vc.
